Our aerogel is used in boards for insulation and finishing systems. Aerogel-containing boards deliver nearly three times the performance of conventional insulation boards, requiring only one-third to one-half the space. The hydrocarbon sweetening process involves the catalytic extraction of mercaptans from refinery products. We have specially developed granular activated carbon grades as catalyst carriers for hydrocarbon sweetening. Due to its large internal surface area, these activated carbon grades have proven to be excellent carriers for the catalyst, enabling conversion of the mercaptans to disulfides.

Gas scrubber liquid purification

Gas scrubber liquids like amines (e.g. MEA, MDEA, DEA, Benfield solution) and glycol are used in gas absorption systems for the removal of sour gases (CO2/H2S) and water vapor from natural gas. This sweetens the gas in order to maintain its heating value and reduces corrosion in the process. These gas scrubber liquids are purified by granular activated carbon, which removes degradation products, surfactants, organic acids, pipeline preservatives and other corrosive contaminants. The result is reduced foaming of the amines, reduced corrosion, lower amine make-up, overall higher amine quality, and increased efficiency of the plant operation.

Reinforcing composites

Our hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silicas can improve the performance of laminating resins and gel coatings used in the manufacture of fiber reinforced composite products. In polyester and vinyl ester laminating resins, our fumed silica can provide thixotropy that enables resin flow and fiber wetting during application. At the same time, it can prevent the resin from running or sagging on slanted or vertical surfaces while the resin cures. In gel coats, our fumed silica can enable thicker, non-sag coatings as well as can prevent the settling of pigments and filler.

Compression pack insulation

Our aerogel products are used in insulating compression packs that allow subsea pipelines to operate effectively, transporting unprocessed hydrocarbons through long distances along the cold ocean floor. These insulating compression packs, manufactured exclusively by Johns Manville Industrial Insulation Group using our aerogel, enable ultra low thermal conductivity for pipe in pipe applications, allowing for thin insulation and reduced outer pipe diameters, in an easy to apply system.
